Economics Told Me To Get the Puppy

Let's define a simple economic concept. It's called opportunity cost and this is what the Encyclopedia of Economics defines it as...

"The value of the next-highest-valued alternative use of that resource. If, for example, you spend time and money going to a movie, you cannot spend that time at home reading a book, and you cannot spend the money on something else. If your next-best alternative to seeing the movie is reading the book, then the opportunity cost of seeing the movie is the money spent plus the pleasure you forgo by not reading the book."

Now, yesterday my mom and I were discussing my graduation and trying to plan it out. While discussing, she asked me what I wanted for graduation. I blurted out, "iPhone!" without much thought. She agreed, of course, but later while discussing it with my sister she suggested I just ask for money, that way if I had to pay some last minute unplanned bills I would have money. And if I didn't have bills I could end up getting the phone.

But today it hit me. Opportunity cost wants me to get a puppy.

I know, it doesn't make sense but here's my train of thought. If I spend 200ish dollars on a puppy instead of getting the phone then there's my grad present. Now instead of paying 20-60ish dollars each month on a phone, I could really just spend that on puppy food, vet, etc. A puppy would definitely be more engaging than a phone (though some would not agree) and it would last longer than one as well (as long as I don't kill it).

So, using opportunity cost, I should get the item that has the next-highest value and is more valuable. I think the puppy wins. So no phone and yes to the dress!

Now just to convince those I'm living with this summer.... *Hint, Hint*

Another Explosion Iminent

As I get older, and more stressed with school and work, I find it harder and harder to not insult or mock someone's religion, beliefs, or lifestyle. Often times, these people are those who are closest to me. I'm definitely not one of those people who can hold their tongue for too long. When someone shoves their beliefs in your face and they seem completely and utterly ridiculous compared to typical society. Hipsters annoy me. Immature people annoy me. Blindly happy people annoy me.

Having open-minded people close to me is both a cursing and a blessing. If only I could learn to see more of the blessing and less of the curse.

Explosion Iminent

I think if I wait much longer to get a puppy or kitten (preferable a puppy) I could very well explode. I feel like I've been holding my breath for almost two years now and that I need to just shout out that is time for Bekah to get herself a faithful, cheerful companion and she doesn't mean a husband!

I want a dog.

The only thing keeping me from getting a dog is that my sister might kick my ass if I did. Thank god for sisters. I think...

Awkward....

It's terribly uncomfortable when you're watching television and your roommate walks in to strip down to her skivvies as she gets dressed for bed...Right in front of that television....

Thank goodness there's just 4 more weeks before she moves out!

Introducing....Spring!

The blog got a facelift. It's supposed to reflect the light, happy feeling of spring but I'm pretty sure it's just this color because I think it's pretty.

Today, I knocked a few things off my April T0-Do list. This is the list...

I accomplished number 5 today. I headed onto campus and forked over 40-something dollars for an outfit I'll wear one day out of the 80 years I'll be alive. A cap and gown is just as useless as a wedding dress. That much money for one day?!

I also decided that it was finally time to turn on both of my lamps (Anthony Bourdain No Reservations is on tv). Last summer, I kept both lamps on and the windows open whenever I was home. Once winter came, I refused to turn the one on the right on and only had one on. Now that both are on it feels more like summer!

I thought I'd also throw in a picture of my rats. May is waiting for me to give her some food. She just finished eating my leftover wrap from lunch.

June is eating the wrap she stole from May. Sharing is definitely not caring.

Spring Cleaning

As a college kid, my belongings are typically limited to the room I reside in (which also reminds me that returning home from break today was especially hard because my life basically takes place in one bedroom in Anderson while in Greenwood it exists in a HUGE house). This means that spring cleaning takes maybe one day. Last week, I cleaned my desk at school, my space at work, and my room at home. So the next few weeks, I'll be focusing on organizing my responsibilities (projects, bills, etc), thoughts, and house. Now the weather just needs to warm up and I'll be ready for summer in no time.

That's important now in the start of April because for AU kids our summer starts the first week of May. That means I have 4 weeks left until summer is here! Then I have two months of summer classes and then I'm done.

I should also briefly mention what went down on my spring break this year. Last year, I had two spring breaks because I took a week off school. One break i spent working while the other I spent with family in Florida. This week is currently spring break for me but I spent Thursday through today at home in Greenwood. This is a quick break down of what I did.

1. Dinner with family
2. That Fun Place all day
3. Dinner at the Madre's
4. Massive breakfast meal
5. Got a new puppy named Caesar
6. Grilled out for dinner
7. Delicious lunch in Indy
8. Two different parks
9. Hung out with sister
10. Got lost driving with niece

It was a crazy break but it was wonderful to just get away from work and school and spend time with the family. I had some wonderful moments that made me warm and fuzzy inside where I just had to smile at how content family makes me.
